Finding Your Writing Voice
January 9, 2024
One of the questions I get asked most often is: "How do I find my writing voice?"
It's a beautiful question, but also a tricky one. Because the truth is, your voice isn't something you find—it's something that's already there, waiting to be heard.
What is a Writing Voice?
Your writing voice is the unique way you express yourself through words. It's the rhythm of your sentences, the words you choose, the stories you're drawn to tell. It's what makes someone read a paragraph and think, "This sounds like you."
Why It Matters
When you write in your authentic voice, something magical happens. Your words carry weight. They resonate. They feel real because they are real—they're coming from a place of genuine expression.
How to Discover It
- Write without editing yourself. Let your thoughts flow naturally, without worrying about what sounds "good" or "professional."
- Read widely. Notice what writing styles you're drawn to, what makes you feel something.
- Write about what matters to you. When you're passionate about a topic, your voice comes through more clearly.
- Don't try to sound like someone else. Your voice is yours alone, and that's what makes it special. Remember: your voice is already there. You just need to give it space to speak.
